While walking the aisles of an antique store or resale shop, I often think about the people who owned all of this stuff before it found itself here. You know, normal questions like: Who did it come from? What were they like? Are they still alive? Was their house haunted? Did they participate in any dark rituals that may have bound a demonic entity or disgruntled spirit to these items? Even though we may never know the answers to these questions, some of our listeners have encountered a ghost or two inside a thrift store or attached to an item they felt drawn to bring home and those are the stories we’ll be telling you in this episode! You’ll find all sorts of wildlife and beauty within those boundaries and families flock to them year round. But there are some who believe these parks hold other things deep inside. There are secrets kept amongst those trees and waterfalls. There are some who believe in cryptids and the fae calling these parks home, others think there may be portals to other places, dimensions, that lie inside, waiting for some unsuspecting passerby to make contact. They endured years of psychological terror in the form of sightings of full body apparitions so clear it was shocking to see those people disappear right before their eyes, disembodied voices whispering through their windows in the dark of night and chanting through the woods, objects being moved and stolen from their home when nobody was around to commit the act, burns appearing on their bodies and belongings when they woke in the morning, accidents causing severe injuries, and an overall sense of danger and dread over the entire home – it had an energy so negative and so strong that even a church sanctioned exorcism couldn't stop it. Their home, located in northern Appalachia and now referred to as the infamous Hinsdale House, was a source of great struggle for the entire family for some time and left a lasting mark on all of them. What began as a family searching for a slower life and a country oasis turned dark and remains with them, some through to their end on this earthly plane. Something I love about Reddit is the community aspect of the site. When you’ve had an unusual experience, you’re sure to find somebody in some sub somewhere that can relate to you in a way. This is especially reassuring, and interesting to the broader public, for people who have spotted cryptids! The belief in vampires has been around for centuries - long before we had the term. The fear of the dead rising up from their graves and wreaking havoc on our communities has been something that societies put quite a bit of thought into probably since the beginning of humankind. We have evidence dating back thousands of years that the undead terrorized our population in one way or another. Though the term has changed, as have the descriptions and ways of dealing with them, vampires still exist today. They’re in our literature and film, they’re a part of most cultures, and some even believe that the supernatural beings still walk among us. Last week we discussed the history of the historic city of Boston, MA. We also took a little dive into some of the haunted cemeteries and parks in town. One thing about Nadoly that you may know if you’ve been here with us for a while is that she is a believer of bigfoot! When we think of older cities, we often think of the people who lived there, the monumental events that happened within its borders, and the impact it had on the community. The Great Lakes are a beautiful and integral part of industry in the Midwest and Canada. But they also hold a great many secrets beneath their waves. They can be dangerous and incredibly mysterious to those willing to set sail from their shores. It was the evening of September 12, 1952. Several young boys between the ages of 10 and 13 were playing on the lawn of their small town elementary school playground. They were running back and forth, playing a game of football, when 3 of the boys looked up into the sky. A large ball of light was moving across the town above them. They watched as it made its way over to a hill near G. Bailey Fisher’s farm before floating down behind the trees. One of the boys shouted to their friends that it must be a shooting star and that there might be gold inside. Excited, the boys made plans to head on up to the site and make new discoveries. Together with the mother of 2 of the boys, and an older relative in the national guard, they trekked through the woods and on to something completely unexpected. What they didn’t know as they marched up the hill was that they were about to encounter something so frightening and unexplainable that people would still be talking about it more than 70 years later. We all know the feeling. Pure, unadulterated fear. When that pit begins to form in your stomach and your chest tightens. Your heart is racing and your breath catches in your throat. That chill that washes over your body from the tip of your toes, all the way up to the top of your head. Your hands trembling every cell in your body telling you to get out. That feeling when you can hardly speak as your body decides on its own how it's going to escape whatever danger lies before you. We sometimes get that feeling telling stories here of dark entities and terrifying nightmares. But if you’ve spent much time here with us at Ghosteas, then you know there are plenty of fears that we have between the two of us. One that we share and have talked about countless times is thalassophobia, or a fear of large bodies of water. Now that the warmer months are upon us, at least for us on this side of the world, I thought it would be appropriate to combine some of our fears – the unknown, the dark, the paranormal, the ocean – and tell stories of hauntings at sea. I’ve gathered several stories from around the web of people who have experienced some unnerving encounters while out on the ocean. We have everything from suspected ghosts, unknown creatures in the depths, aliens above the open waters, and I even threw in a few creepy tales that have nothing to with the paranormal but still gave me that uneasy feeling in my gut.
